“Creation of the United Nations World Water Quality Alliance”

The WWQA, convened by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and supported by the Swiss Confederation, constitutes a voluntary global expert, practitioner and policy network, with a shared motivation to assist the global community in addressing key water quality issues of socio-political and environmental concern. The WWQA and its Social Engagement Platform are seeking to involve a broad spectrum of organisations, administrations and individuals in what is intended to be a global initiative in order to increase awareness regarding the issue of water quality and to unite the talent, energy and enthusiasm of all concerned so as to produce tangible evidence of progress towards the achievement of SDG 6. As has been clearly demonstrated since the beginning of the century, there exists a need to promote, disseminate and implement broad supranational policies through regional and perhaps even more importantly, municipal administrations in order to ensure tangible, practicable initiatives and results based on co-creation at a local level involving all elements of the so-called Quintuple Helix including the research and innovation sector, citizens, cultural entities and the private sector whether it is directly connected to the issue of water or not. The participation of organisations such as ASCAME and its members are vital if the WWQA is to be truly effective in the Mediterranean region.
